Cultural Programming
During the April 2026 school holidays, Gujaga Foundation delivered a series of cultural experiences for Dharawal children and families from the La Perouse Aboriginal community. These programs were designed to support the passing on of Dharawal culture between generations and to increase opportunities for children and families to take part in cultural activities led by community.
We began with a community cultural celebration, bringing together children, families, Elders and local community organisations. The day included Dharawal cultural activities such as weaving, shell art and language games, taking part in the mullet haul, and giving families a chance to spend time together and take part in cultural activities.
In the following week, we took young people from our community on a cultural excursion, where they visited culturally important places. Children took part in cultural learning, language activities and listened to stories, helping them build knowledge of Dharawal culture and strengthen their connection to Country and community.
It concluded with artefact‑making workshops for boys and girls held at La Perouse. Children learnt traditional skills and cultural practices specific to Dharawal culture. These workshops focused on learning by doing and provided space to pass on skills directly to the younger generation.
Through these cultural programs, Gujaga Foundation continues to:
Increase access to cultural experiences for La Perouse Aboriginal community members
Offer a wider range of cultural activities for children and families
Support community members to lead and share cultural knowledge
Strengthen cultural identity, connection and belonging across generations
Support Future Cultural Experiences
Cultural Experiences are a key part of Gujaga Foundation’s work with the La Perouse Aboriginal community. Donations help us continue delivering programs that support children and families to learn, connect and participate in culture.
